What is Font MCP?
Font MCP is a design advisor MCP server for choosing fonts. It researches Reddit, Typewolf and FontsInUse, scans your package.json and config files to detect a project's vibe, analyzes any website's typography, and generates Tailwind or CSS setup code with four tools.
Font MCP is built around one claim: a font list is not advice. The server researches live discussions on Reddit and Typewolf, reads your project files for a sense of its style, and then helps set up the font you pick.
It is a Node project you build from source. The README quick start gives OpenCode and Codex an install file to fetch and follow, and lists no MCP config snippet or transport.
What it does
- Searches r/typography, r/web_design, Typewolf and FontsInUse for real usage examples and expert recommendations.
- Reads
package.jsonand config files to detect a project's vibe and technical stack. - Scans any website URL to identify its fonts and whether they are paid or free.
- Generates Tailwind or CSS configuration and tries to download the font files.
- Stays on top tier and paid fonts unless you turn on the free fallback in config.
How font files get found
After you choose a font, the download step tries several strategies in order: direct CDN and GitHub raw patterns, community sharing hubs, and open directory searches. If all fail, it writes a HUNTING_INSTRUCTIONS.txt with search queries.
Font Hunter v2 searches GitHub, GitLab, VK, Archive.org and open directories for your font files. By default it stays on S-tier and paid fonts, and free fonts are used only when you enable allowFreeFontsFallback in the config.
Who it is for
Best for
- Developers choosing type for a new project who want recommendations tied to the project's own stack.
- Teams that pair font picks with scale and pairing guidance such as a type scale skill or better typography rules.
- People who then apply the choice using a typeset skill.
Not for
- Anyone without a license for the commercial fonts they ask it to fetch. Buy or license through the font's own shop.
- Projects that need no downloaded files. For rules about readable text, see web design guidelines.
Use it with UiChemy

Frequently asked questions
What is Font MCP?
Font MCP is an MCP server that acts as a design advisor for fonts. It researches live discussions, scans your project files for its vibe, analyzes websites, and generates Tailwind or CSS setup for the font you choose.
How do I install Font MCP?
Clone the repository, run npm install and npm run build with Node.js 18 or newer. The quick start also lets OpenCode or Codex fetch an install file from the repository and follow its instructions for you.
Which tools does Font MCP provide?
Four: consult_font_expert for recommendations from a vibe, analyze_project_and_recommend for scanning a project path, analyze_website for reverse engineering a site's fonts, and setup_font_config for setup code and font file downloads. Each tool takes a few named parameters.
Which AI tools does it work with?
The README quick start names OpenCode and Codex, each with its own install file. It describes the server as an MCP server for AI agents, but gives no config snippet or transport for other clients, so check the repository first.
Where does Font MCP find font files?
The download step searches GitHub, GitLab, VK, Archive.org and open directories for the font files. It makes up to maxDownloadAttempts tries, 10 by default, and writes HUNTING_INSTRUCTIONS.txt with search queries if all fail. Free fonts are used only when allowFreeFontsFallback is enabled.
Can it use free fonts only?
By default it stays on paid and top tier fonts. Set allowFreeFontsFallback to true in the config to allow a Google Fonts fallback. The default for that option is false.
Where do downloaded fonts go?
They go to the folder set by outputDir, which defaults to ./public/fonts. Hunt artifacts are written there too, including the HUNTING_INSTRUCTIONS.txt file created when automatic download fails after the configured number of attempts.
What are alternatives to Font MCP?
For applying type once chosen, see a typeset skill and a type scale skill. Those guide sizing and hierarchy, while Font MCP focuses on researching and selecting fonts for a project.
