What is BaseLayer?
BaseLayer is a component collection for the shadcn ecosystem, built on React Aria Components and Tailwind. It has no MCP server of its own. Its docs say it works with AI coding assistants through the shadcn MCP server, which lets an agent find and install BaseLayer components from its registry.
BaseLayer is a component collection built for the shadcn ecosystem. Like shadcn/ui, its components are copied into your project and become part of your codebase, not installed as dependencies. It uses React Aria Components and Tailwind with tailwind-variants.
There is no BaseLayer server to run. The docs say it is AI native through the built-in shadcn MCP server, which treats the BaseLayer registry like any other shadcn registry.
What changes in your agent's output
- The agent installs components from the registry with the shadcn CLI instead of writing buttons and forms from scratch.
- React Aria Components supply the accessibility behavior, so keyboard and screen reader handling is not rewritten per page.
- Components such as Accordion, RadioGroup and CheckboxGroup export both single and grouped versions from one component.
- An llms.txt file lets chat assistants without MCP read the docs by URL.
How the setup works
- Make sure the project uses React, TypeScript and Tailwind 4 or newer, then initialize shadcn if there is no
components.json. - Add the
@baselayerregistry tocomponents.json, or use the full registry URL once. - Enable the shadcn MCP server in your client and ask for BaseLayer components by name.
Who BaseLayer is for
Best for
- React and Tailwind apps that want accessible components with the copy-the-source model of shadcn registries.
- Teams comparing sources, such as Plate for editors and the community shadcn/ui server for stock components.
- Builders who also review output with a skill like an improve UI skill.
Not for
- Projects without Tailwind 4 or newer. The usage docs list it as a prerequisite.
- Anyone looking for BaseLayer-specific MCP tools. Everything runs through the generic shadcn server.
- Design-to-code from Figma. This is a component source, not a design reader.
Use it with UiChemy
BaseLayer gives a React front end its components. For a WordPress site, UiChemy builds there: AI to WordPress imports an existing AI build, and Composer edits it inside Elementor or Gutenberg. Click Get Started on uichemy.com.

Use your client's shadcn MCP setup, which runs
npx shadcn@latest mcp. Then ask for BaseLayer components. The docs suggest a rule telling the agent to prefer BaseLayer over stock shadcn/ui.

Frequently asked questions
Does BaseLayer have its own MCP server?
No. The documentation says it works with AI assistants through the built-in shadcn MCP server. BaseLayer is a shadcn registry, so the generic shadcn tools list and install its components, which is why this page lists the shadcn tools.
How do I install a BaseLayer component?
Run npx shadcn@latest add @baselayer/button after adding the @baselayer registry to components.json. You can also pass the full registry URL once. The CLI installs the files and dependencies for you.
What stack does it need?
The usage docs list React with TypeScript, Tailwind 4 or newer and familiarity with shadcn. The components use React Aria Components and tailwind-variants, and a manual copy setup also needs the tw-css-animate package.
Which assistants can use it?
Cursor has the shadcn MCP server built in, according to the docs. For other chat assistants, the docs point to the Open in AI button on component pages and to an llms.txt file you can reference in a prompt.
How is it different from shadcn/ui?
Both copy source into your project. BaseLayer builds on React Aria Components and has its own styles. For stock components through an agent, see the shadcn MCP server, and for a specialized registry, Plate.
Is it actively maintained?
The repository's last push was December 24, 2025, which is the most recent activity on the default branch. The README says contributing guidance is coming soon, so check the issue tracker and recent commits before betting a production project on it.
What license does it use?
The repository is MIT licensed, and GitHub detects MIT. The README calls BaseLayer a component library for modern workflows and AI-powered tooling, while the docs describe the registry-and-copy model for using it.
