What is the ui-skills skill?

ui-skills is a routing skill from ibelick. Before UI work, it has your agent decide whether the task is UI related, pick a category through the ui-skills CLI, and load the smallest useful set of skills: one by default, two for two clear angles, and never more than three.

ui-skills is the routing layer of Skills for Design Engineers, a repository by ibelick. Its skill, named ui-skills-root, holds almost no UI rules. It decides which other skill the agent should load before it touches an interface.

The SKILL.md says it is shown by npx ui-skills start and is also available in the registry. It names Codex and Cursor among the agents it serves. When the goal is unclear, it asks one short question.

The seven step protocol

  1. Decide if the task is UI related.
  2. If it is not, return no skill needed.
  3. Identify the likely category.
  4. Inspect that category with the CLI.
  5. Select the smallest useful skill set.
  6. Load only the selected skills.
  7. Implement using that context.

Selection rules

  • Prefer one skill. Use two only when the task needs two clear angles.
  • Use three only for broad review, redesign or multi-surface work, and never more than three.
  • Route by topic first, then stack, then specificity.
  • Prefer specific skills over broad ones, and framework-specific skills when the stack is obvious.
  • For quick cleanup, take the most specific craft, visual or layout skill. If unsure, inspect categories and pick the safest narrow one.

Who ui-skills is for

Best for

  • Agents with many UI skills available that would otherwise load too much context for a small job.
  • Design engineers who want one entry point to motion, layout and craft skills, for example web motion design.
  • Jobs where the category is known, such as motion, but the exact skill is not.

Not for

  • A single known job. If you already know the skill, install it directly, such as premium frontend UI.
  • Learning UI rules from this skill. It routes and does not teach, so the rules live in the skills it selects, like Impeccable animate.
  • Non-UI tasks. The protocol returns no skill needed for them.

Use it with UiChemy

ui-skills chooses the skills that shape an interface build. When that build has to end up in WordPress, UiChemy takes over: import it with AI to WordPress, or start from Figma with Figma to WordPress. Click Get Started on uichemy.com.
