What is StyleSeed?
StyleSeed by bitjaru is an open source design method engine for coding agents. One registered skill routes to 22 internal workflows, applies 74 craft rules, and runs a scored gate that asks for revision below 80. A STYLESEED.md lock keeps accent, radius and motion fixed across screens.
StyleSeed is an open source engine from bitjaru that turns recorded design decisions into project local rules and workflows for coding agents. The README frames the goal as repeatable expert judgment, and says plainly that a score does not replace human design acceptance.
Only one skill, styleseed, is registered. It chooses exactly one first workflow from your request, such as build, audit, tokens or motion, and never fans out to run every workflow. The 22 workflows ship inside the skill directory.
Workflows by request
- Build or redesign: a screen, page or component goes to the build workflow, while first setup goes to setup.
- Explore and reference: studio explores creative directions, and reference compiles a screenshot, URL, Figma export or existing UI into rules.
- Critique and review: audit finds what is wrong with a screen, and review checks code against project design rules.
- Score and verify: score runs code and evidence gates, and verify inspects rendered output and spacing in pixels.
- Tokens and motion: tokens handles brand color and semantic palettes, and motion handles a named animation treatment.
- Specialist passes: accessibility, lint, flow, copy and feedback states each have their own workflow.
What the gate checks
StyleSeed ships 74 craft rules and a scored gate from 0 to 100 that tells an installed agent to revise screens below 80 before presentation. The workflow must actually be invoked, since a markdown file alone cannot block delivery.
- An unselected default accent, instead of a recorded color role.
- Emoji used as UI icons.
- The icon in a chip above every feature card.
- An all even grid of same weight centered cards with no focal point.
- Accidental flat black backgrounds and type sizes outside the selected scale.
- Hardcoded hex values in components, since tokens only keeps the lock intact.
On 120 rendered benchmark cells, the README says the enforced gate improved both tested agents by 5.3 points, while raw rules alone were inconsistent. That is the maintainer's own measurement, so test it on your own project.
The design lock and related approaches
Your skin, key color, radius and motion are written once to STYLESEED.md, and the skills re-read it for visual work. Related: DESIGN.md, extract design system and theme factory.

Who StyleSeed is for
Best for
- Teams whose agent output keeps drifting between screens and sessions.
- Projects that want a recorded accent, radius and motion choice reused everywhere.
- Anyone who wants a rendered, scored check before a screen is shown.
Not for
- Quick one off tweaks. The setup, resolve and gate steps add process.
- Anyone expecting a score to replace a designer's sign off. The README says it does not.

How to install StyleSeed Skill: 74 Craft Rules, a Scored Gate and a Design Lock
claude plugin marketplace add bitjaru/styleseed
claude plugin install styleseed@styleseedThe README also lists a separate npx based install path, and an optional ss-learn extension that is not part of the core install.Add the marketplace
Run
claude plugin marketplace add bitjaru/styleseed. The README says the repository is also a Claude Code plugin marketplace.Install the plugin
Run
claude plugin install styleseed@styleseedto get the single public skill with its 22 internal workflows.Or copy the skill by hand
Clone the repository and copy the folder engine/.claude/skills/styleseed into your agent's skills directory. The folder is self contained.
Start a fresh session
Send
/styleseed Help improve this screen. Preserve our existing design choices and show me what needs a decision. Then run/styleseed setupand/styleseed resolve.
Check that it loaded
Run /styleseed setup then /styleseed resolve. The resolver writes a targeted .styleseed/effective-rules.md bundle with a source hash manifest, and a build request should end with a score.
Key features
- Single entry skillRegisters one skill that picks a first workflow from your request instead of loading all 22 at once.
- Design lock fileWrites skin, accent, font, radius and motion to STYLESEED.md so later screens and sessions stay consistent.
- 74 craft rulesChecks for AI tells such as the default indigo, the icon chip cliche, template layouts and rainbow lists.
- Scored gateScores a build from 0 to 100 and asks the agent to revise anything under 80 before you see it.
- Eight output grammarsPicks the grammar that fits the result, including consumer service, operations, technical, editorial and commerce.
- Generative palette engineTurns any key color into OKLCH ramps, semantic roles, contrast evidence and CSS tokens.
- Nine brand recipesChanges geometry, containment, controls, density and motion, not only color, through structural recipes.
- Reference compilationCompiles a screenshot, URL, Figma export or existing UI into an evidence backed project grammar.
- Rendered verificationInspects the rendered output in pixels after the code score, so spacing is measured rather than assumed.
Frequently asked questions
What is StyleSeed?
StyleSeed is an open source design method engine by bitjaru for coding agents. It records design decisions as project local rules, routes requests to 22 internal workflows through one skill, and scores the result with code and rendered checks before presenting it.
How do I install StyleSeed?
Run claude plugin marketplace add bitjaru/styleseed, then claude plugin install styleseed@styleseed. You can also clone the repository and copy engine/.claude/skills/styleseed into your skills directory. Start a fresh session if the skill does not appear.
How many skills does StyleSeed install?
One registered skill, styleseed, with 22 workflows bundled inside its directory. Older installs used 23 separate skills, and the README describes an update workflow that consolidates old ss-prefixed entries after you reinstall through the same channel.
What does the 0 to 100 score mean?
It is a gate that tells the agent to revise any screen scoring below 80 before presenting it. The README states that 80 points is not expert approval, and that a markdown file alone cannot block delivery unless the workflow is actually invoked.
What is the STYLESEED.md lock?
A file where your skin, key color, radius and motion are written once. Installed project instructions and StyleSeed skills re-read it for visual work, so those decisions can carry across new screens and sessions instead of drifting.
Does StyleSeed only work in Claude Code?
No. The README says it reads CLAUDE.md in Claude Code, AGENTS.md in Codex, Amp and Gemini CLI, and .cursorrules in Cursor. The plugin marketplace route is specific to Claude Code, so other agents use the other install paths.
What license does the repository use?
GitHub lists bitjaru/styleseed under the MIT license, and the README describes it as free and MIT. Check the license file in the repository again before reusing its rules or skins inside a commercial product.
