What is the Impeccable typeset skill?

Typeset is one of 24 commands inside Impeccable, a design skill for AI coding agents. You run it as /impeccable typeset with an optional target. It loads reference/typeset.md, which tells the agent how to review and repair typography.

Typography carries information, hierarchy and voice, and the command's rule is to improve it inside the established visual world. It does not swap your identity unless you asked for that.

What changes in your agent's output

• Heading, body, label, metadata and data roles become distinguishable at a glance, without reading the copy.
• Body copy lands at 1rem (16px) or larger on the web, with prose held to 45 to 75 characters per line.
• Sizes come from a role scale, not a pile of arbitrary values, and repeated roles stay identical across screens.
• Fonts load only in the weights in use, with metric-compatible fallbacks, so text does not vanish or jump.
• Light text on dark gets slightly more line height, tracking and weight so it stays readable.

How typeset works, in order

1. Run a typographic assessment: six questions, each answered with a file, selector or computed value.
2. Run a mechanical scan with impeccable detect --json --scope type.
3. State the system before editing: roles, contrast between roles, measure, authoritative faces, constraints.
4. Apply the changes, then verify each item with rendered or source evidence and rerun the scan.
5. Hand off to /impeccable polish when the hierarchy holds. If spacing is the problem rather than type, run /impeccable layout first.

Who Impeccable typeset is for

Best for

• Pages with the right colors and the wrong type: blurred hierarchy, long lines, too many sizes.
• AI-generated UI that still carries default font choices nobody examined.
• Teams that want type fixes with evidence behind each claim.
• Dense dashboards and long reading pages, where the command favors one tuned family and a fixed scale.

Not for

• Inventing a new brand identity. A replacement typeface routes through the separate new-work step and updates DESIGN.md.
• Pairing fonts for fun. A second family needs a role only it can perform.
• Producing WordPress output. It edits the front-end code in your project.

How to install Typeset

npx impeccable install

1. Run the installer from your project root

   Run npx impeccable install. It lists the agent folders it detects, such as ~/.claude, ~/.codex or a project-local .cursor, lets you keep or change the set, then asks whether to install for this project or globally.

2. Skip the prompts in scripts

   Pass --providers=claude,codex,cursor and --scope=project (or global) to choose without questions. On Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, GitHub Copilot and Grok Build the installer also writes the provider-native design hook for the current project.

3. Reload your agent

   Restart or reload the harness so it picks up the new skill. In Codex, open /skills or type $impeccable.

4. Run init once

   Run /impeccable init. It reads the project, asks only for missing product facts, and writes PRODUCT.md so later commands know the audience, purpose and constraints.

5. Run typeset

   Run /impeccable typeset the pricing page. The target is optional and can be a page, a component or a file. /impeccable pin typeset creates a standalone /typeset shortcut.

Check that it loaded

Type /impeccable on its own. It shows the command list, and typeset should be in it.

Key features

• Two isolated assessmentsA typographic assessment and a mechanical scan run independently, as sub-agents when the tool allows it. The command tells the agent not to let detector findings anchor its design judgment.
• Six-question auditAuthority and fit, hierarchy, scale and consistency, reading, stress, and delivery. Every question must be answered with a file, selector or computed value, not a bare yes.
• Mechanical scanimpeccable detect --json --scope type checks the files, and the agent also inspects dynamic or arbitrary font values the detector cannot read. A clean scan is called a floor, not proof of good typography.
• System before editsBefore touching code the agent states the roles it needs, the contrast between them, the reading measure and density, which faces are authoritative, and any performance, localization or accessibility limits.

• Visitor-mode rulesOn persuade and experience pages, display type may carry the voice. On operate and read pages, one well-tuned family and a fixed role scale are often right. Native apps follow the iOS or Android references.
• Keeps your identityConfirmed brand families stay. If a typeface change would create a new identity, the work routes through new-work.md and DESIGN.md is updated first.
• Font deliveryLoad only the assets and weights in use, provide metric-compatible fallbacks, avoid blocking text, and preserve browser zoom, user font settings and platform text scaling such as Dynamic Type.
• One paragraph rhythmParagraph spacing or a first-line indent, not both, because using both marks the boundary twice. Numeric, tabular and code features are used where the content benefits.
